Press release – Plant ETP Welcomes EU Bioeconomy Strategy

Plant ETP Welcomes EU Bioeconomy Strategy and Advocates for Plant Breeding R&I as a Cornerstone of a Sustainable Bio and Circular Economy

The European Commission’s Bioeconomy Strategy sets a bold vision for Europe’s green transition, aiming to reduce fossil dependency, boost competitiveness, and deliver climate and biodiversity goals. Plant ETP strongly supports this initiative and emphasizes that plant breeding research and innovation is at the heart of the bioeconomy.

Plant breeding provides the foundation for sustainable biomass supply, enabling crops tailored for food, feed, and industrial applications such as bioplastics, biofuels, textiles, and construction materials. Innovations in breeding, using conventional methods and new genomic techniques, enhance yield, resilience, and resource efficiency, creating integrated value chains that deliver economic, environmental, and social benefits.

Plant ETP calls for:

  • Dedicated EU funding for breeding research
  • Public-private partnerships to accelerate innovation
  • Regulatory clarity for advanced breeding tools

As plant breeding is not explicitly mentioned on the Bioeconomy Strategy, Plant ETP continues advocating for plant breeding R&I as a strategic investment, Europe can fully realize its vision for a competitive, sustainable, and circular bioeconomy.
