New Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda 2025–2034

We are proud to present the new Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) of Plant ETP, a forward-looking roadmap to guide European research and innovation in plant biology and breeding carefully crafted by Plant ETP members from the seed and breeding sector, farmers and academia, and representing the plant sector from fundamental research to crop production and distribution.

This SRIA outlines a comprehensive vision to strengthen the EU’s agri-food systems by focusing on three key pillars:

  • Target – Content of R&I: Scientific priorities to enhance plant resilience, productivity, nutritional quality, and bioeconomy potential.
  • Framework – Process of R&I: Addressing systemic barriers, fostering public-private collaboration, and improving the research-to-market pipeline.
  • Foundation – Communication, Engagement & Education: Raising awareness, building trust, and developing the next generation of plant sector professionals.

The SRIA highlights the urgent need for Europe to close its innovation gap, support cutting-edge technologies like New Genomic Techniques (NGTs), and invest in a skilled, science-literate workforce. It also calls for stronger alignment between EU policy goals and public investment in plant breeding R&I.

This agenda is intended to inform the final Horizon Europe Work Programme (2026–2027) and the design of the next Horizon Europe Framework Programme (FP10).
