Plant ETP Workshop on the Implementation of the Future NGT Regulation
Plant ETP recently hosted a workshop in Brussels bringing together experts from research, farming, seed and breeding sectors, as well as stakeholders from across the agri-food value chain, to discuss the implementation of the future EU framework for New Genomic Techniques (NGTs).
The workshop focused on key aspects of the forthcoming legislation and its delegated acts, including the criteria for Category 1 NGT plants, implementation and verification procedures, risk assessment considerations for Category 2 plants, and broader issues related to sustainability and international harmonisation.
Representatives from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) presented the Commission’s approach to the implementation phase, providing participants with valuable insights into the next steps of the regulatory process.
The discussions highlighted the importance of continued stakeholder engagement to ensure that the future NGT framework is science-based, proportionate and practical, while supporting innovation, sustainability and the competitiveness of the European agri-food sector.
